Oh my....board games are a BIG favorite in our house! If you live in PA, there is a great online game store (run by a very nice family) in Lititz PA. You can go to their house to pick up your order, or have the games mailed to you.
ReplyDeleteI've spent gobs of money here:

Some favorite games.....adults:
ReplyDeleteSettlers of Catan
Carcassonne (I see there is a kids of Carcassonne now!)
Ticket to Ride
Lost Cities (2 person card game, building on numbers - so your older kids might be able to play this one too)
Leonardo DaVinci
Basari (your kids could probably play this one too)
I'm not entirely sure how old your children are, but Apples to Apples (Jr and adult) have been big hits in our family.
ReplyDeleteWe've also enjoyed Quiddler tremendously. It's sort of Scrabble with cards. Unless you have precious wordie children, this might work best if you team up adults/older kids with younger ones and have each time "share" a hand.
*team - each TEAM.
ReplyDeletethat's what I get for not proofreading.
We really like the game Cranium. Hubbs and I get together with our neighbors every few weeks and play board games.
ReplyDeleteHungry Hungry Hippo!
ReplyDeleteSkipbo
Penté
Cole and Bella love board games but we usually can't break them out because of the little twins. They always run over and steal the pieces or step on the board!!
ReplyDeleteI ditto Settlers of Catan and
ReplyDeleteCarcassonne (they are the similar kind of strategy games, I would just get one to start) and the apples and apples. Apples are really fun when you have guests, teens or extended family.
I like puzzles too :)
my husband loves bananagram (kind of scrabbble but different, you do your own board)
My sister loves boardgames, she would always buy some at garage sales! I wish we would play more here..
Any advices for boardgames for only 2 adults?
We LOVE LOVE LOVE Sequence, it is a board/card game of strategy. I believe it is ages 8 and up, but my son has been playing it since he was no older than 6. It is one of our vacation games we play when we are at our camp (with no electricity or tv!), and the ENTIRE FAMILY and all of our friends love it!
ReplyDeleteActaully...now that I am thinking about it, I think they now have a 'kids' version as well for the littles.
Thank you for all the suggestions so far! I've played Apples to Apples, but I had never heard of the strategy games. I will have to keep those in mind for future birthdays and Christmas : )
ReplyDeleteSequence is one of my favorites too. I forgot about that one. It's still in a box with other games. We'll be putting bookshelves with cabinets in our living room sometime in the next month and for the first time ever we will have room to store all our games! Yey!
TL- For 2 person board games, my husband and I like to play:
*Racko (another game I forgot for the list)
*Sequence
*Yahtzee -this is probably my favorite game to play together. we write down the dates on our score cards. It's fun to look back and see the score cards from when we played many years ago!
*SETS- My second favorite 2 person game. We received this game for our wedding and it has been a lot of fun to play together.
Okay, I'm going to add Sequence and Racko to my list above. I wonder what other games I will re-discover once we get our boxes unpacked?!?
For two-adult games, I suggest sticking with the classics. My husband and I have whiled away many an evening hour after our son was in bed with backgammon, Go, and Othello. I personally prefer backgammon, probably because it's got a more straightfoward strategy than the other two and I'm good at it. My husband ALWAYS kicks my rear at Go and Othello, which is probably why he likes to wager with me when playing them. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat about that game that uses the wooden board and the little pebbles... mancala or something like that? That's a lot of fun for 2 people too.
ReplyDeleteI love board games too but my husband is a sore WINNER so we dont play much. lol!
ReplyDeleteHow about the old fashion game of dominoes with the young children when they are just learning their numbers and counting the dots helps them a lot.A game in learning.
